A Daddy for Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is a bittersweet day for me!  As a young girl, I was busy and didn’t ever sit around thinking, “woe is me, I don’t have a dad.”

When I was older and became a Christian I began learning how God designed a family.  I wish I could take you back to the days when I was learning so many amazing things and I was realizing that God had a purpose for me even though I wasn’t from a perfect family.  You can read my “daddy story” by clicking here.

Every year on Father’s Day, I would hear a sermon on what God’s Word says about father’s.  I actually loved hearing these messages.  I knew I wanted one of those!   I purposed that I was going to marry someone someday that would be a father as God designed.  Someone who loved me and loved his children.  He would love, provide, care and protect them.  He would never leave them, or me.  And….I did!  His name is Jim.  I call him, “My Jim.”  It’s been 36 years and we have two incredible kiddos and an even more amazing son-in-law and daughter-in-law.  I don’t even have to tell you how precious our 5 grand babies are!  I can go on and on about my family, but today, I want to focus on one of the best words in the world to me……daddy!

You’ve heard the saying, “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy.”  There is so much to being a daddy, but yet, it’s so simple.  Just love your kiddos, regardless the situation you are in.  It doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have.  We were poor as church mice (oh wait, we were church mice) and our kids would have never known it.  Their daddy made sure they had everything they needed along with much love and attention.  Did I mention how busy he was?  When we had our first child, he was in school full time and worked full time as an associate pastor. If I gave you his schedule you would wonder how he is alive today.  Add the pressures that go with that position and you would wonder even more. When we had our second child, we moved 300 miles away to a small town so he could pastor a small church. That story will be for another time, but trust me, it’s a doozy!   God showed us many things while in the ministry and they all have to be for a purpose because some of the stories are crazy.  We learned a lot about people, leaders and how to survive.

I’ll share one of my favorite stories…

When we were living in a small West Texas town and living in the church parsonage, my husband received a call to come and preach for the previous pastor of the church we served at before moving.  This was a special church as it was where we learned so much about the ministry.  We were excited about the trip to see our friends and be back to familiar territory.  The day before we were to leave, I came down with a horrible case of the flu.  I couldn’t even lift my head off the pillow.  Jim struggled with what to do as he didn’t want to let the church down and didn’t want to leave me. I assured him I would be okay. He saw how difficult it would be for me to take care of an 18 month old and a 4 year old, so he took the kids with him.  He did everything he could to make sure I had everything and was comfortable.  I was so sick, I didn’t care if I had anything.  I wanted to die at that moment.  Long story short, my Jim, traveled 300 miles, stayed in a hotel with two little ones, studied for his message, got the kids ready for church, took them to the nursery and preached a message in the morning and evening service.  The only tragedy was while curling Patti’s little hair with a curling iron, he burned her ear!  Bless their hearts!  Little did the church members know what all went on with their guest speaker that day!

I do hope you were raised by a daddy that loved you with all his heart!  Every child deserves that.

The sad news is, there are many children in our country who don’t have a father in the home.  Look around, do you see any?  With over 25 million in our country, there might be one close by.  Reach out to them and love them right where they are!  That isn’t counting the children raised in homes with a father who doesn’t notice his children and surely doesn’t love them like he should.   Reach out to that daddy if you can and encourage him to show love to his children.  *Let me quote that statistic one more time.  In the United States there are over 25 million children being raised in a single parent home.

  2. Beverly, this is such a sweet post! I can see why you cherish your husband so. Luckily, I was blessed with an amazing father; and I was truly a “daddy’s girl”. In turn, I married a man very much like him. He has been amazing with our daughters. I do not take that lightly, as I see so many children without a father figure in their lives. Hope you and your family had a very Happy Father’s Day!
