Why Decorate and Clean Your Bedroom?

As I was cleaning today, I thought I would write a quick post about one of my favorite things to do….cleaning!  I will do a post on each room as I get time.

I don’t have a housekeeper.  I have hired one a few times, but, I have found that I really enjoy cleaning my house.  I love keeping a schedule for my housekeeping.  I have a feeling of great accomplishment when I have cleaned and everything is in order.  Not to mention the money I save by cleaning my own house.  Don’t get me wrong….there may be a time when I decide to have help, but for now, I am able to keep up.  Please don’t think I judge anyone that has a housekeeper; I would envy you before I judged.

I wanted to talk about our bedrooms on this post.  I think it is extremely important that your bedroom be exceptionally clean, in order and organized and decorated to your personal taste.

Our bedrooms are where we rest and so it should be a very peaceful room.  I don’t know about you but if my bedroom looks like chaos and has zero order and piles of clothes, books, and things laying around, I wouldn’t rest well in that.  There was a time before I married that I had piles of clothes each day that I tried on before work and changed my mind….I was too lazy to hang them back up.  I would have a laundry basket in the corner with laundry that needed to be folded.  My drawers and closet didn’t have any order as I was always in a hurry to get to school or work and I had things I didn’t need or want and would fumble through those things to find what I wanted.  Those days are gone!  It took me a while, but, I finally mastered having order in my life!

What is your style? Does your bedroom represent your style?  Whatever your budget is, you can still decorate and have a beautiful place to rest.

Do you have a place for everything?

Here is a list of things that I strive for in my bedroom:

I don’t store anything under my bed.

Every single drawer contains items that are organized and I use and want.  If I come across anything that I don’t need or like, I say good bye to it.

Every possible place, that can be, is decorated.  I change things around on a regular basis as I get bored easily.  I like change.  I like to have things around me that make me smile.

I clean every nook and cranny on a regular basis.

I make my bed every single morning right after I get up for the day.

I change my sheets regularly.  Nothing like clean crisp sheets for a good nights rest!

Every night before I go to bed, I make sure everything is put away.

We had a television in our bedroom.  We recently took it out as I barely watched it and I just didn’t like the looks of it.  So, we put it in my sewing and craft room.  Much better.  Now, I can watch my favorite Hallmark movie and create all at the same time.

When our bedrooms are organized and decorated like we want, it is easy to clean and put in order each day.  All you will have to do is make your bed and you are done.

A good question to ask yourself is:

If someone dropped by your house right now and wanted to look at your bedroom, what would you say?  Would you say “sure,” because you know it’s in order and looks nice or would you say, “no way is anyone looking in there, it is a mess, when I get it all cleaned and decorated you can look at it!”

If you are ashamed for anyone to see it right now, then now is the time to set up a plan and get things in order and get your special room decorated that brings you peace and happiness.

Speaking of cleaning.  I keep a spiral notebook of my cleaning projects.  I have a section in my spiral for each room of the house.  Such as the section for my bedroom, I have a list of all the things that need to be done.  I keep the spiral with me as I clean.  When I see something that needs to be done, I write it in my journal.  Things such as touch up painting, lightbulb changing, change out window treatments, etc.  I keep a running list of projects that I want to do in our bedroom.  Maybe something like a serious cleaning project that I will have to have more time to do.  Once I get them done, I cross that item off the list.  If I’m wanting to change some decorating items and have an idea to do something else, I write it down in my spiral. Maybe, I need to purchase a new sheet set, I put it in my journal and when I go shopping I transfer my needed items for that room to my shopping list.

Something nice to have in your bedroom if possible, is a reading corner.  It’s nice to have a quiet place to read, study and have quiet time.

How’s your bedroom?  Are you pleased with every detail?  If not, I challenge you to take care of it and get a system and just go for it.  Don’t stop until you get it just like you want.

A great way to start is:

Deep clean every area of your bedroom.

Organize every drawer.  Get rid of anything that you don’t want, like or use.

Arrange your room to where it is comfortable and pleasing to the eye.

Come up with a plan for your decorating.  It can be as simple or elaborate as you want.  What is it that makes you feel peace in a restful room?  Now, go for it.  Don’t drag it out.  You should be able to do all of this in one weekend.

Are there things you want to do, but due to expense or some other reason you aren’t able to? Then get your journal and write down exactly what you need and want to finish your dream bedroom.  Once you have it on paper, it will be easier to achieve and work towards.  But, my suggestion is, if you are wanting.. say something like a bedding set and you don’t have the funds for it.  Don’t leave your bed blank with just sheets and a blanket showing.  Get something much less expensive that you like and decorate around that until you get your dream bedding set.  Or, if you want to paint, but there is no way to paint right now.  Don’t leave your walls blank.  Go ahead and decorate them and when you are able, paint.

Saturday/Sunday Schedule….

You thought I was through, didn’t you?  Saturday’s are set aside to take care of details outside.  I keep the front porch swept, we have lot’s of dirt out here in West Texas.  I even have to dust our front door down on a regular basis.  We have a breakfast porch that needs constant care as well.  This Spring, I really hope to plant some flowers.  We will see if that really happens.  If my handsome prince doesn’t get around to sweeping out the garage, I will do that, too.

*My tip for the day:

Make sure your doorbell is clean.  Have you ever rang someone’s doorbell and it was so dirty you hated to touch it?  It’s easy to not think about that little chore, but oh so important. (In my book anyway) It will take about 5 seconds to do unless it is in bad shape.

Bible Study and Church Services in the morning and evening are on the schedule for Sunday.  The afternoon is a time of relaxation.  Great time to read, rest, watch a good movie or catch up on cooking shows. 🙂

Friday’s Schedule…

Friday, already?  Whew, time flies, doesn’t it?

Each Friday on my schedule it is time to clean my husband’s office and my office.  Very easy day!  If there is something I skipped from the week, I will get it done today. 

 On my laundry list is my husband’s laundry.  

Once my sewing/craft room is completed, I will probably add that to the Friday list as well.

I love it when my week goes smoothly, but there are many where I don’t get to everything I wanted.  When that happens, I just do the best I can and wait until the next week to catch up.

The important thing is to keep a smooth and orderly running home that is a haven for you and your family.  Don’t be a slave to your home.  Once you get on a schedule it usually runs great.  But, as we all know, we don’t live in a perfect world and things will go wrong.  You just move on and know that God is in control.

Thursday’s Schedule…

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

Today calls for cleaning/organizing the Living Room, Family Room, Sun Room and the Entry.  Mostly lots of dusting and vacuuming.  I have some tweaks on the decor to do, but that will come later when I have more time for that.  As far as laundry, just my personal laundry on this day.

*When I have appointments to be at the next day, I may get a head start and do some of tomorrow’s duties the day before, so I don’t have to worry about it. 
*If it is a really busy day out of the home, I will just wait until the next week on that rooms day to clean.

I love their aprons!

Lord, I pray that I am wise with my time and with the things that are really important.   May I use my home to bring honor and glory to you.

Wednesday’s Schedule…

On my cleaning schedule for Wednesday are the bedrooms.  I have four of them, so it is easy to stay on top of things and I can get done pretty quick when I’m caught up on the organizing part.  A couple are guest rooms, so they don’t have to be cleaned each week unless I see dust that bothers me. 🙂  I try not to look unless I have to.  One of our guest rooms that we called the pink room is now in the process of becoming my craft/sewing room.  It was sad to see the furniture go and all the fun decor that was in there.  But..I am excited about the transformation that is taking place.  The room has been painted and we are now waiting on carpet and furniture.  

For the laundry schedule; towels and sheets are on the agenda.

A couple of tips are:
*Each night before bed, make sure everything is in it’s place and the kitchen is cleaned up.  
*Try not to leave the house each day until everything is done.
*Love your home.
*Love the ones that live in your home even more.
One of my favorite quotes is from Elizabeth George, author of “A Woman After God’s Own Heart.” 
You want your husband and children to walk through the door and say “Ahhh, finally, I’m home.”

Lord, help me to always stay strong in the area of building a safe, comfortable and orderly home for my family.  I pray that they would always love coming home.

Tuesday’s Schedule…

On Tuesday’s I have bathroom cleaning on the schedule. I have 5 bathrooms to keep sparkling.  I love a sparkling bathroom! Since we have guest bathrooms, I don’t have to clean those each week.  I just make sure they are ready for guests at all times.

Sam’s is usually a regular stop on my grocery day. (Monday) I make sure I am stocked with cleaning supplies and paper goods.  In my organizer I keep a running list of needs and the to do’s for each bathroom.  I’m doing some tweaking of some decor in each bathroom all the time it seems.

Today is the day I usually go to Target if I’m needing any toiletry items.  Ulta is on my list too….I usually come out with way more than I need when I go in there, so I try to be careful.  I have a coupon for Ulta, so that will be a blessing to use.

Speaking of coupons, I’m debating if I want to give it a whirl.  

I also set a side time on Tuesday’s to work on Women’s Ministry projects.  Our newsletter is about due, so I will get started on that today.  

If that isn’t enough, I have a hair appointment, can’t miss that one! 🙂

Lord, help me to be wise in the use of my time and my spending today.  As I am out and about, I want to be a witness for you and be aware of those in need even if it is just a smile.  Thank you for your many blessings!

Monday’s Schedule…

Proverbs 31:17
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.”
I love organizing and keeping lists to keep me on schedule.  Not that I always do, but at least I try.  Monday’s are set aside in my Home Organizer as the day that I concentrate on the kitchen and laundry room.  I deep clean every Monday on these two rooms.  In my organizer I keep a running list of goals I have for each room, changes I want to make and a running shopping list of needed items.  Monday is also the day I set aside for grocery shopping.  It is so nice to bring groceries home to a clean and organized kitchen.

As far as laundry goes, I wash any kitchen towels and cleaning items on this day.

I have been wanting to make some changes to these rooms.  I’m thinking just adding a few things here and there will do.  I am working on getting new window treatments.  So many ideas, it is hard to settle on one.  I’m also trying to figure out what to do in the center of my table.

Lord, the desire of my heart is to honor you by keeping an orderly and clean home.  Thank you for the many blessings you have given.  May I use these blessings to honor you and bless family, friends and strangers.  As I clean and do my laundry, may I be reminded of how you are the one that sought me and bought me and cleansed me to be white as snow.

Organizing with Lane Jordan…

A few years ago, I bought the book, 12 Steps to Becoming A More Organized Woman, at our local Christian book store.  I loved this book, as organizing is one of my favorite things to do.  When we needed a speaker for one of our women’s events, I contacted Lane Jordan, the author.  She came and spoke for us and what a delight she was!  She is now a sweet friend and I am thankful to know her.  She has since then written a couple more books and is about to have another one published on Christmas organization.  I can’t wait to read that one!

My Spiral Notebook System

Organizing My Life With Spiral Notebooks

Searching for the perfect day planner has always been a difficult task for me. I have spent so much money on planners of every sort and size trying to find the one that would suit me and my life best. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like them, it means they just didn’t work for me. I am a full-time wife, mother and now a grandmother and I organize a Women’s Ministry at my church as well as a Bible class. I would love to share with you how I came up with a solution that has worked perfectly for me. I use the inexpensive spiral notebooks that you can find at any office supply or discount store. I have paid anywhere from ten cents to 1.00 for my spirals. I like bright colors, so I always choose the brightest assortment of covers on the spirals. Since I spend such little money on them, I don’t hesitate to tear out pages to throw away or file. With the spiral system, I can set it up anyway that I want to instead of according to someone else’s plan. As my season of life changes or I take on a particular project or ministry, I am able to incorporate a different title of notebook. I use a permanent marker to write the title on the front cover. You can also find bright small sticky note tags to mark a page that you may need to turn to on a regular basis in each notebook. I store my notebooks together on my desk for easy retrieval.

Spiral #1 – To Do

This is where I keep a running list of my to do’s for each day. Instead of little notes everywhere of things to get done, I put the today’s date at the top of the page. I make my list of things to do for that day. At the end of the day whatever is not marked off, I transfer those items to the next page with tomorrow’s date on it. I then tear out the list from today and throw away. I do this until my pages are all gone and then replace with a new spiral when needed.

Spiral #2 – Home Management

The first page of my Home Management Spiral has my house cleaning schedule. Each day I tend to a different section of the house. Which I have found is easier for me than taking an entire day to clean.

I also have a page designated for each room of my home. On this page I list my goals for that room. (Examples: Guest Bath needs new towels. Nathan’s room needs the ceiling fan cleaned.) As I complete a task for each room, I then cross off that item.

I have the habit of clipping decorating pictures out of magazines of things that I would like to try. I use a glue stick and glue them in this notebook for future reference. You may also want to have a section of books, music, or movies that you have loaned out. Anything that has to do with your home management would go in this spiral.

Spiral #3 – Kitchen

I keep a separate notebook for my kitchen. I record menu plans and recipes. I can use this same book for my grocery list as I make my menu plans. I just tear out the page before heading to the grocery store. Anything involving food and kitchen will go in here. If you love to decorate, you can even put your goals and pictures in the kitchen spiral.

Spiral #4 – Diet Journal

This is a journal that I most recently put together because I am desperately wanting to shed some pounds. I glued my before pictures for motivation. I have my measurement chart listed with my goal as well. I have recorded anything that will motivate me and encourage me in the area of a healthy eating lifestyle. I record thoughts and feelings that I’m having in the eating area. I record scriptures that the Lord has given me to comfort me. I use it as a food journal when I want to see exactly what I’m eating which will show me why I’m where I am. I have pictures from magazines of the type of clothes I would love to wear. (ex. how I would like to look in a pair of jeans) I even put in samples of hair styles to try for when I get to my goal weight and I want to treat myself to something different.

Spiral #5 – Personal Journal

This is the spiral that I record daily thoughts, ideas, dreams and goals. I try to write at least one paragraph a day on anything. Maybe a sermon I heard that sparked something or a memory I had from childhood. It could be something one of my children said or did that I don’t want to forget. I have even made a list of places I would like to travel to someday. I even record books I want to read.

Spiral # 6 – Bible Study

This is where I record scripture I’m memorizing and thoughts that come to me as I have my Bible study. I record my prayer list here as well.

We all wear different hats in our lives. Consider these notebooks your hats. Each one is for a different area of your life. I have a notebook for my Writer’s Group that I’m a member of to record thoughts and assignments in. I also have one title Women’s Ministry that I keep ideas and information in that pertain to that one certain area of my life. It has been proven that when you write down your goals, you are 80% more successful to complete that task.
